Roc de la Rivière is a 100% Viognier white wine produced by Domaine In Ventis, an independent organic family winery based in Rabastens, in the Gaillac winegrowing area of Southwest France.

Classified as Vin de France, this wine is a good reminder that a French wine does not need a prestigious appellation on the label to offer character, precision and real drinking pleasure.

Roc de la Rivière has become one of the In Ventis wines that receives the warmest response from our customers in Taiwan, while also being very well received in France. Its approachable style, expressive fruit and round texture make it an excellent introduction to Viognier.

Tasting Notes

Roc de la Rivière opens with expressive aromas of apricot and peach, characteristics often associated with Viognier.

On the palate, it is aromatic and rounded, with moderate acidity and a generous fruit profile. Despite the naturally expressive character of Viognier, the wine remains easy to approach and particularly pleasant to drink.

This combination of ripe fruit, roundness and freshness is one of the reasons why the wine has been so well received both in Taiwan and in France.

A Vin de France That Deserves Attention

French wine classifications can sometimes give the impression that the quality of a wine depends mainly on the appellation written on the bottle.

Roc de la Rivière is a useful example of why this is not always the case.

Although it is classified as Vin de France rather than AOP Gaillac, it is produced by the same independent organic family estate, from carefully cultivated vines around Rabastens.

The classification does not tell you whether a wine is enjoyable, expressive or carefully made. The producer, the vineyard, the grape variety and the decisions made in the cellar remain essential.

For us, Roc de la Rivière is precisely the kind of wine worth discovering: straightforward, expressive and capable of surprising people who might otherwise choose a bottle only because of its appellation.

Viognier Beyond the Rhône Valley

Viognier is strongly associated with France’s Rhône Valley, but the grape variety is also grown successfully elsewhere.

At Domaine In Ventis, Viognier is cultivated in Southwest France, where the local growing conditions and the estate’s winemaking choices give it a different expression.

It is a good illustration of a fundamental idea in French wine: the same grape variety can taste very different depending on where and how it is grown.

Rabastens – Gaillac Winegrowing Area

Domaine In Ventis is located in Rabastens, within the historic Gaillac winegrowing area of Southwest France.

The estate’s vineyards are situated on hillsides between approximately 200 and 300 metres above sea level, with clay over limestone soils. The almost constant local wind also helps keep the vines dry.

Although Roc de la Rivière is classified as Vin de France rather than AOP Gaillac, it is produced within this same vineyard environment by Domaine In Ventis.
