Domaine Le Cazal – Organic Family Wines from Minervois

Six Generations of Family Winemaking Since 1850

Perched at approximately 300 metres above sea level on the Causse du Minervois in Southern France, Domaine Le Cazal is an independent family estate whose winegrowing history stretches back to 1850.

For six generations, the Derroja family has cultivated this land and passed its knowledge of the vineyard from one generation to the next.

Today, Benoît Derroja continues the work of his family, succeeding his father Claude and bringing his own vision to an estate deeply rooted in the landscape and traditions of Minervois.

While preserving this long family heritage, Benoît is also developing a more environmentally responsible approach to viticulture, combining organic farming with precise vineyard work and a close understanding of each parcel.

DISCOVER LE CAZAL WINES

A High-Altitude Minervois Terroir Surrounded by Garrigue

Domaine Le Cazal is situated on the Causse du Minervois, at around 300 metres above sea level.

The vineyards grow on distinctive clay-limestone soils surrounded by Mediterranean garrigue, aromatic herbs, wild vegetation, and a rich natural environment.

This combination of altitude, limestone, Mediterranean climate, and surrounding biodiversity helps shape wines that combine concentration with freshness and aromatic expression.

The wild garrigue surrounding the vineyards is an essential part of the landscape and contributes to the strong sense of place found in the wines of Domaine Le Cazal.

Old Carignan and Grenache Vines

One of the estate’s most remarkable assets is the age of some of its vineyards.

  • Carignan vines more than 80 years old,
  • Grenache Noir vines more than 50 years old.

Older vines naturally produce smaller yields than young vineyards, but their deep root systems and lower production can result in grapes with remarkable concentration and complexity.

For Domaine Le Cazal, these old vines are not simply a technical advantage. They are living witnesses to the estate’s history and to several generations of the Derroja family working the same land.

They also give Benoît access to mature vineyards that can express the depth and distinctive Mediterranean character of the Minervois terroir.

Certified Organic Since the 2023 Harvest

Domaine Le Cazal has been officially certified organic since the 2023 harvest.

This certification reflects a broader philosophy based on protecting the vineyard ecosystem while maintaining the quality and identity of the grapes.

A significant part of the vineyard work is carried out manually, allowing close observation of the vines throughout the growing season and more precise intervention when necessary.

Rather than treating organic farming as a marketing label, the estate approaches it as part of a long-term relationship with its land.

Precision from the Vineyard to the Cellar

At Domaine Le Cazal, the character of a wine begins well before the grapes arrive in the cellar.

During the weeks leading up to harvest, the estate carefully monitors ripeness across the different vineyard parcels.

This parcel-by-parcel approach helps determine:

  • the optimal harvest date,
  • which grapes will be selected for each cuvée,
  • the desired structure and style of the wine,
  • and the balance between ripeness, freshness, and aromatic concentration.

This precision allows Benoît to adapt his work to the conditions of each vintage while maintaining the individual identity of every wine.

The wines selected by Yueh’s Choice from Domaine Le Cazal are produced within the AOC Minervois, an appellation known for expressive Mediterranean red wines shaped by limestone soils, sunshine, and garrigue landscapes.

Wines with a Strong Minervois Identity

Domaine Le Cazal does not seek to produce standardized wines.

Its cuvées reflect different expressions of the estate’s vineyards, grape varieties, old vines, and Mediterranean terroir.

Among the wines selected by Yueh’s Choice are Le Pas de Zarat, an organic AOC Minervois red wine, and Alvéoline, made from old-vine Carignan.

These wines offer two different ways to discover the estate: through the broader expression of the Minervois terroir and through the distinctive personality of one of Southern France’s historic grape varieties.

As our collaboration with Domaine Le Cazal develops, we hope to introduce more of Benoît Derroja’s wines to Taiwan and offer a broader view of the estate’s work.

Domaine Le Cazal at Yueh’s Choice Taiwan

Domaine Le Cazal represents many of the qualities we look for when selecting French wines for Taiwan: independent family ownership, organic viticulture, old vines, a distinctive terroir, and knowledge passed down through generations.

We first discovered the estate through our own search for independent French producers whose wines and philosophy deserve greater visibility in Taiwan.

For Yueh’s Choice, Le Cazal is not simply another Minervois label.

It is the story of a family that has worked the same land since 1850, of old vineyards that carry decades of history in their roots, and of a new generation continuing that heritage while developing its own vision of the domaine.
