The Leathers Used by Berthille
Berthille exclusively works with premium full-grain cowhide leather, ensuring that every bag is both elegant and built to last. Three main types of leather are used in the workshop, each with its own finish, touch, and specific care instructions.
Types of Leather Offered
- Grained Full-Grain Leather

- Smooth Nappa Leather

- Nubuck Leather

Each leather is carefully selected for its quality and durability:
- Full-grain leather – Premium, very resistant
- Pigmented full-grain leather – Soft, smooth feel
- Lightly buffed leather – Velvety texture, delicate touch
Grained Leather – Distinctive & Durable
This leather is obtained through a process called “foulonnage”, which enhances the natural grain of the skin without altering its structure. It offers a luxurious feel often referred to as “round hand”.

Benefits:
- Resistant to daily wear
- Natural appearance
- High-end texture
Care Instructions:
- Clean 1–2 times a year with a soft cloth and a nourishing leather lotion
- Avoid contact with printed or colored materials to prevent transfer
- Keep away from direct sunlight or heat sources that could fade the leather
Smooth Nappa Leather – Elegant & Supple
Nappa leather is a smooth, pigmented full-grain leather with a refined satin finish. Its softness and flexibility make it ideal for creating luxurious and comfortable bags.
Care Instructions:
- Same as grained leather: gentle cleaning with a leather lotion
- Protect from sunlight, heat, and material transfer
Nubuck Leather – Velvety & Delicate
Nubuck is a full-grain leather that has been lightly sanded on the surface to achieve its signature “peach skin” texture. It’s soft to the touch, naturally elegant, and water-repellent thanks to a protective treatment.
Care Instructions:
- Use a soft brush or sponge to remove dust
- Remove stains with a suede eraser
- Reapply a suitable waterproofing spray after cleaning
- As with other leathers, avoid contact with colored or printed materials and keep away from heat
